D1 You have contributed towards the production of a practical portfolio of examples of editing techniques that have been annotated to describe the techniques and conventions and their purpose. (Pass)
Your timeline has critically discussion of the developments in film editing referring to specific examples of films and filmmakers across the Early and Modern periods and there is confident discussion of how one stage led on to the other within the context of the principles of in camera editing, continuity, soviet montage, new wave discontinuity, and how these have influenced stylistic editing techniques of contemporary auteurs in independent cinema. (Distinction)
Video Guide – lots of info but rather confused facts and lacking clarity with repetition structure the video clips match the commentary – the developments discusses the techniques by Melies (jump cuts and transitions) but not in cam editing or what this is as development. Discusses splicing but confused understanding. Purpose is discussed using the clips as examples. There is comparison with continuity and Montage and the Modern period. Nonlinear and Linear edit is explained with some sense of argument. Conclusion compares continuity and alternative techniques and purposes in contemporary examples and a lack of meaning over entertainment. (M)
P2 M2 D2 M2 An editor’s log shows some understanding of the function of an EDL. All steps have been followed to a standard approaching professional practice within a realistic time constraint. Bins done, 2/3rds Shots Logged by shot types and EDL
P3 M3 D3 M3 A proficient edit with occasional continuity errors. 2 x Notable jump cuts in the station scene and temporal overlaps where action is played twice. 1 jump cut later with the phone. Some sense of continuity established later with 180 degree rule and eyeline matches and the use of flashforwards to create anxiety well accomplished. Has a sense of pace suitable for the genre and the narrative is clear. Sound is unbalanced at times with wind noise present but stings and ambience used to good effect with images at times. More sophisticated techniques such as match on action and used later.
